When I tried to help him he screamed loudly and moved from a great pain he felt. In the hospital where he was taken it was shown that he fractured part of his thigh bone – a frequent injury that happens to people at certain age.

Standard therapy for that injury is a replacement of that part of bone with prosthesis. Fractured part of a weak bone is replaced with endoprosthesis made of a tough metal. It enables to the certain extend to get back a mobility of the hip joint. Patients who were condemned to lay in bed to the end of their lives have a chance to wake up and walk. That fall down and a serious surgery make a large family of my father in law (he has five sisters and unknown number of nephews) activated. Instantly there were organized consultations with all MD that belong to the family or were acquainted to the family.

My wife and her mother were on their phones two days without a break talking about the situation and listening all good advices and opinions given by the next orthopedic authority. I was watching at this phenomenon from a side listening to all discussions about medical doctors and hospitals where we need to consult . We are living in Cracow (Poland) where every institution has its reputation. A person, company or an institution that is not known to anybody from a circle of close friend simply does not exist. It is especially valid for medical doctors and hairdressers.

Two days after the accident when we waited for the surgery one of my father’s in law sister asked what type of prosthesis we will choose. It turned out that there are several types of prosthesis, there are “better” and “worse”.

National Health Fund refunds implanting of “worse” prosthesis because it is cheaper. “Better” prosthesis costs about one thousand dollars more but the lady insisted that my father in law deserves for the best care and the best prosthesis. At that moment I knew that I needed to think it out.

It was not only for the reason that I am a person who dislikes any big and unexpected spending very deeply but also I was greatly surprised. What is the reason for buying a cosmic prosthesis to the paralyzed person? It took two days to explain that to the family and I started to think about the situation from other perspective. All that time no one even asked my father in law a simple question that was directly connected to his situation.

And that was not connected to the problems with articulation my father in law has. The matter was that his opinion was completely irrelevant. His role was limited to receiving the care from his relatives even if they rarely contact in everyday life. What can I say as an Social Anthropologist? This book is first of all a description of all attempts of the people who tries to secure health and comfort of their ill relative.

Sometimes they can do that by paying for the service. But sometimes they can do nothing without breaking he law. But when there is such an alternative: to break the law or to risk the inferior quality of care there is another situation. In such case breaking the law becomes a kind of family/social obligation. In the situation described above no one start to think about bribing the doctors.

But I started to consider if such family attitude explains certain number of bribing phenomena in public health institutions. I analyzed that more than three years and I invite you to read a part of these considerations.Temat: Korupcja - strategie nawiązywania kontaktów i relacji wdzięczności w sytuacji kryzysu zdrowotnego. Ideologia wdzięczności, studium tworzenia sieci współzależności, analiza korupcji w służbie zdrowia jako systemu komunikacyjnego pomiędzy personelem medycznym a rodziną chorego.
